People Online Are Dumber Than You

If I only had a brain online - The Anti-Social MediaIf you ever needed proof that people are dumb online, look no further than the comments on this article, Facebook will end on March 15th!, from the Weekly World News.

The Weekly World News was a paper you often find in the grocery store with insane and ridiculous stories. Though it is no longer a real paper, you can still read it online. It features ridiculous headlines, such as “Bat Boy Lives!” or “Garden of Eden Found!”. These are headlines no rational human being would believe. Headlines like these bring a chuckle and then we get on with our day, smiling that some twisted people are still getting paid to create insane ideas to entertain us.

So, naturally, just like the articles “Bigfoot is my Father in Law!” and “Kim Kardashian’s Butt Explodes!”, when the WWN posted that Facebook would shut down, the masses believed it to be true.

We’re only ten days into 2011, but this may be the saddest thing I see take place online this year. This is like when people tried to login to Facebook from Read Write Web.  People just don’t care to actually inform themselves in any manner. What kind of person believes a company that just had $500 million invested into it would just close its doors in a little over two month’s time?

I want to know who these people are so I can avoid them at all costs. This is why we can’t have a nice internet.

I read that facebook article without realizing it was on Weekly World News site..half way through it I made a mental note to check the URL/logo when Im done reading the article…

I expected to see the onion but was actually kind of excited and hoping I might see NYTimes or a credible source…

turns out, it was WWN…oh shucks …..Im all for a little bit of anarchy and the end of facebook would certainly give us that…it would be lovely to see alas, facebook will probably be around for another few years at least.

I think it’s just a matter of time until someone makes something we don’t expect that will offer better connectivity with our friends that Facebook will be replaced.

Or people really get sick of Cityville requests.

Either way, I need to pay attention to see if anyone mourns Facebook passing away on March 15.

I kind of want to post that article on Facebook just to weed out the people who panic from my friends list. Your comment of “this is why we can’t have a nice internet” made me laugh out loud at my desk. It was a little embarrassing.
I think I just found my new favorite blog. You have my vote on the Top 10 Social Media blogs. We all need a daily dose of sarcasm.

That would make an awesome case study. I want to see the results if you do it.

And I’m glad I made you laugh. I like making my readers think and laugh.

What can I say to that stupidity?
I often read news featured on the first page of Yahoo, I guess home page (oooops, stupid one here too) and the comments are crazy too.
I can’t believe what some people would write. I bet if Facebook asked for people to donate their mothers to keep the site running, that there would be a loooooot of people donating.

I would not donate my Mother to Facebook.

My father on the other hand….

I bet your Mom would be glad to know that you would not donate her to FaceBook! And your Dad would wonder what he could do to help out in any way….He would probably volunteer for you!

I despair. I really do despair. Are people seriously that stupid? Half of them can’t even spel (sic). I’m going to go sit in a dark and quiet room. Perhaps I shall shed a tear for the passing of human intelligence. Perhaps…

Wow - I’m bummed to find out that the Weekly World News is no longer in print - I used to buy them when I was sick for a laugh ;-)

Since there is actually a book now titled Farmville For Dummies it’s settled - most people *are* idiots.

My brother always got me copies of the Weekly World News. I wish I still held onto the one’s he got me.

And with that book, I just lost all faith in mankind. I wonder if you can pay for it in Farmville Cash?
