Morning on Twitter

I spend more time on Twitter than should be allowed by law. It’s an addicting, unhealthy look into the matrix of human communication that’s limited to 140 characters.

I love every minute of it, except for the things that make me want to scoop my eyes out with a spoon.

People act as stupid on Twitter as they do in real life, and they do it the worst in the morning. For some reason Twitter users have to tweet things in the morning like everyone mysteriously forgot who they were in the 8 hours of sleeping.

Most of us just have to deal with someone who is much more excited about the coming of daylight and the work day than the rest of us.

Good Morning On Twitter - The Anti-Social Media

The rest of us, however, still have to deal with people who needs coffee to deal with humanity.

Feed Me Coffee - The Anti-Social Media

I love coffee, and I hate love my Twitter followers, but just because it was dark for 12 hours where I live doesn’t mean my followers forgot me and need to know about my crippling caffeine addiction.

Twitter in the morning is no different than Twitter in the afternoon and Twitter at night. People don’t need to know your literal waking moment. When you wake up, join the conversation. Don’t force the rest of us into your waking dreamland.

I would comment that I agree with you, but I haven’t finished my second cup of coffee yet.

I took until my 8th cup to start replying to comments.

I want to comment on this but first I need my coffee!

    • Jay February 28, 2011 at 5:34 pm #

      But you did comment. Liar.

A friend of mine tweets, “Good morning beautiful people” every single morning.

I promise you that first thing in the morning, pre-coffee, I am anything but beautiful and I’m getting tired of the discrimination. Am I not to have a good morning? Why should my quasimodo-like looks condemn me to a goodness-free AM period?

    Bah Humbug.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And maybe the beholder needs a good twitpic reminder of how ugly we are before a shower.

But alcoholics tweeting that they need booze is fine right?

    Riiiight?

Great cartoons today, Jay. So is Facebook or LinkedIn the right social network for good morning messages then?

    • Jay February 28, 2011 at 5:36 pm #

Oh god if I see something like that on LinkedIn I will recommend you as a psychopath.

I just want to know what happened with Charlie Sheen, because between the “Good Mornings” “Thanks for #FF” and “Mmmm, Coffee” my stream was a buzz bemoaning whatever Charlie Sheen’s latest train wreck was - even Media Bistro got into the act touting that Charlie Sheen was shopping his million dollar biography. Is he really that interesting? or is just like when you pick up a rock and it’s so disgusting you have to put it down, then pick it back up? (that last the courtesy of Pia Lindstrom when she reviewed Blue Velvet — but it sounds like it may apply to this situation as well).

People love watching things get torn to pieces. Why do you think they love reading my blog so much?

  7. Elena Patrice February 28, 2011 at 4:50 pm #

THIS is priceless! Glad your ranted on something I’ve thought, but not expressed (or shall I say “expresso” ;) ). I’ve un-followed a few for simply being obnoxious or living in Snow White’s world where bird fly around their head and the sun is always shining … geez.

I once unfollowed because every hour they had an inspirational quote. I wonder what you are deluding yourself with when you have to inspire yourself every hour.

Yeah, the wake up greetings rank right up there with all the “Good night” tweets. It’s like a little “Good Night, Moon” bedtime story running through Twitter. One reason why I rarely go on Twitter after dinner. The other reason? I usually have a glass or two of wine at dinner and that always prevents me from putting my best tweets forward.

    • Jay February 28, 2011 at 8:33 pm #

Prevents? You are lucky. For most people, wine enables.

I love it Jay! You’ve stated this so very well. When you’re up at 4 in the morning, it’s nice to see people say good morning, but it definitely starts getting old by 9.

Best line: “People act as stupid on Twitter as they do in real life.” Ouch! Lol

Found your site from Danny Brown’s. I like this a lot. Definitely adding it to Google Reader. Keep up the good work. :)

I’m worried about what you’re doing from 4am to 9am on Twitter. But who am I to judge?

I have a friend on FB that says ‘good morning’ every single day and it’s become routine, so I kinda enjoy it. But it works for FB because it’s not technically ‘micro-blogging’, it’s more perfonal. It doesn’t quite work for Twitter.

It’s kinda funny, though, I’m one of those ‘bubbly’ people and lots of people have yelled at me for it. lol

    • Jay March 1, 2011 at 11:13 pm #

I don’t know why bubbly people irk me so much online.

But they do, and I want to stop them.

I have a hacker friend who insists on putting those God-forbidden GM messages every morning, I had to retweet his messages to get his attention. Then he told me that his followers keep messaging him throughout the nights and it is important for them to know when he is up and when he is offline because most of them usually stay up all night or wait through our timezone’s nighttime for his reply.

When he said as much, I forgave him and let him be.

    • Jay March 1, 2011 at 11:15 pm #

See, that makes sense for him as a business person.

But for the rest of us, I don’t care when you sleep or wake up.
